From Collateral to Data: The Future of MSME Lending

September 1, 2026

MSME lending has undergone a remarkable transformation over the last two decades. What was once driven by physical visits, personal relationships and collateral is increasingly powered by data, digital footprints and analytics. As Deepak highlights, the shift can be summed up simply: “No data, no lending.”

GST, Account Aggregator, bureau data, banking information and other digital infrastructure have made previously invisible businesses more visible to lenders. This has opened the door to cash-flow-based lending and the formalization of credit for millions of MSMEs.

Yet, greater data also brings greater complexity. Unlike retail lending, MSME underwriting requires lenders to understand the business, its customers, suppliers, industry, geography and financial behaviour. Fraud detection therefore increasingly depends on connecting multiple data points rather than relying on a single source.

AI is set to accelerate this evolution. By identifying patterns, strengthening fraud detection and creating faster feedback loops, AI can help underwriters make quicker and better-informed decisions—while human expertise continues to provide essential context.

Looking toward 2040, the vision is clear: faster decisions, dynamic credit limits and lending that responds to businesses in real time. The future of MSME lending will not simply be about giving more credit, but about making credit smarter, faster and more accessible.
